Induction Heating vs. Coal Fire

Laatste update:

At Sneeboer, where more than 110 years of craftsmanship and tradition come together in the forging of high-quality garden tools, we are constantly taking steps to refine our processes. Our commitment to quality and precision is unquestionable, but in October 2023, we reached a major milestone in our sustainable transformation. Whereas we used to rely on coke-fired forges, we have now made the switch to an innovative Himmelwerk induction generator for induction heating. This forward-thinking change has a significant impact on our environmental footprint.

What is induction heating?

Induction heating is an advanced technology in which an electric current is passed through a coil, resulting in the creation of a magnetic field. When a metal object is placed within this field, an electric current is induced in the metal itself. This current generates heat due to the resistance in the material. This results in rapid, uniform, and highly controlled heating, which perfectly meets our need for precision in forging.

Sustainability and Environmental Benefits of Induction Heating

The installation of the induction generator at Sneeboer is made entirely possible by the energy generated by 332 solar panels installed on our roof. These panels provide enough electricity to keep the induction machine running continuously, completely eliminating our dependence on fossil fuels. The switch to induction heating reduces our annual CO2 emissions by more than 12,000 kg, which is equivalent to the emissions released when burning approximately 6,000 kg of coke. This is a substantial contribution to improving air quality and promoting a healthier planet.

Improved quality and reliability

Induction heating gives us unparalleled control over the heating process. Using a pyrometer, we can regulate the temperature with extreme precision, ensuring that we always achieve the optimal heat for every part to be forged. This results in higher product quality, with improved consistency and durability. The uniform heat distribution reduces the risk of material defects and strengthens the structural integrity of our tools.

Innovation as a Driving Force at Sneeboer

Innovation is in Sneeboer’s DNA. We are constantly looking for ways to improve our processes, even if that means rethinking centuries-old methods. The transition to induction heating is a clear example of how we combine traditional craftsmanship with modern technology. This technological advancement underscores not only our commitment to quality but also to sustainability.

The Green Future of Traditional Blacksmithing

Our investment in the Himmelwerk induction generator and solar panels goes beyond mere technological improvement; it is a testament to our commitment to a sustainable future. We are proud of this progress and remain determined to uphold our traditions while innovating for a better world. At Sneeboer, we believe that the future of traditional blacksmithing is green, and we are determined to make that future a reality.
