Het gewicht van de planttroffel zit in het blad waardoor het lijkt alsof deze niet goed in balans is. Echter is de planttroffel niet bedoeld om te scheppen of te verplanten maar om plantgaten te maken. Het maken van een plantgat is makkelijk te doen door de planttroffel in de grond te steken en heen en weer te bewegen. De planttroffels van Sneeboer worden ook gebruikt om de miljoenen bollen in de Keukenhof te planten. De planttroffel is verkrijgbaar met een essen- of een kersenhouten heft van verschillende lengtes.
