At Sneeboer, where more than 110 years of craftsmanship and tradition come together in forging high-quality garden tools, we are constantly taking steps to refine our processes. Our commitment to quality and precision is unquestionable, but in October 2023, we reached an important milestone in our sustainable transformation. Whereas we used to rely on coke-fired forge fires, we have now switched to an innovative Himmelwerk induction generator. This progressive change has a significant impact on our carbon footprint.
What is induction heating?
Induction heating is an advanced technology in which electric current is passed through a coil, resulting in the creation of a magnetic field. When a metal object is placed within this field, an electric current is generated in the metal itself. This current generates heat due to the resistance in the material. This results in fast, even and highly controlled heating, which perfectly matches our need for precision in forging.
Sustainability and Environmental Benefits of Induction Heating
The introduction of the induction generator at Sneeboer is made entirely possible by the energy from 332 solar panels installed on our roof. These panels provide enough electricity to run the induction machine continuously, completely eliminating our reliance on fossil fuels. Switching to induction heating reduces our annual CO2 emissions by more than 12,000 kg, which is equivalent to the emissions released from burning about 6,000 kg of cokes (coal). This is a substantial contribution to improving air quality and promoting a healthier planet.
Improved Quality and Reliability
Induction heating offers us unparalleled control over the heating process. Using a pyrometer, we can control the temperature extremely precisely, always achieving the optimum heat for each part to be forged. This leads to higher product quality, with improved consistency and durability. The uniform heat distribution reduces the risk of material defects and strengthens the structural integrity of our tools.
Innovation as a Driving Force at Sneeboer
Innovation is in Sneeboer’s DNA. We are constantly looking for ways to improve our processes, even if it means rethinking age-old methods. The transition to induction heating is a clear example of how we combine traditional craftsmanship with modern technology. These technological advances underline not only our commitment to quality, but also to sustainability.
The Green Future of Craftsmithing
Our investment in the Himmelwerk induction generator and solar panels goes beyond technological improvement; it is proof of our commitment to a sustainable future. We are proud of this progress and remain determined to uphold our traditions while innovating for a better world. At Sneeboer, we believe the future of craft blacksmithing is green, and we are determined to make that future a reality.
